Network Marketing Now - Sowing Seeds and Harvesting Success

There is no question that network marketing and MLM are powerful home business models. Many people have earned substantial residual incomes with this business. However, statistics say that many people starting a network marketing home business will quit within their first 90 days. Why is this?

How do you know what to look for? Consider this story about a gardener and a network marketer who both get off to a good start but give up too quickly. I know this may sound silly, but bear with me.

Our gardener rents a small, fertile plot of land from his neighbor. He plants his garden to provide food for his family. He has never raised a garden before, but has ideas about what it will take and does some reading on the subject. He tills the soil, plants his seeds, and makes sure everything is watered in. He takes care to check his garden daily for weeds and insect pests.

At the same time, our network marketer plants his own seeds by advertising his business in several different places. He is new to network marketing, but is following the training provided by his upline.

After one week, our gardener finds a few seedlings sprouting from the soil. He is delighted, and continues checking his garden daily and watering regularly. Our network marketer receives a few inquiries about his business and is diligently following up. Both are pleased and feel they are going in the right direction.

After two weeks, a lot more seeds are sprouting in our garden, and some weeds too. Our gardener diligenty pulls the weeds and keeps everything going. At this point his work is increasing, but he is more than happy to keep at it. Our network marketing business builder receives a few more inquiries, and places some more ads.

Now three weeks have passed, and our new garden is starting to take off and grow fast. The seeds that sprouted the first week are now big plants, but so far have not yielded a harvest. Our networker is feeling okay about his prospects, but still hasn't sponsored his first associate.

After six weeks, our gardener finds that the seeds he planted so long ago have become pretty big plants, and many are nearing the stage where they will begin to produce a crop. Our network marketing guy has sponsored one new associate from all his efforts.

At this point our gardener has second thoughts. He has put in a lot of work for six weeks, but has no vegetables to show for it. Frustrated and tired, he quits tending his garden. He is saying to himself, "This just didn't work. Look at the time and effort I put into this, money too, and I have nothing. Gardening doesn't work!"

Just two weeks later, his neighbor gathers 15 pounds of potatoes, a dozen nice tomatoes, and a bushel of beans. This is only the initial harvest - there is much more to come. He is puzzled. It just doesn't make sense that the gardener quit so close to the harvest he had worked so hard to enjoy.

At the same time, I'm afraid our network marketer has second thoughts too. He says "I have put in all this time and effort, spent $500 on advertising, and all I have to show for it is one new associate. Network marketing doesn't work!"

When our networker quit, guess what happened? He lost everything he had worked toward. His sponsor and upline will now reap the rewards of his hard work and the seeds he planted.

I'm afraid that many people quit at a similar point in the growth of their business. It isn't unusual to start out, and two months later only have one or two new distributors in your group. You were likely expecting many more new associates by now, but is this really the time to give up? Not at all!

Growing a business, just like growing a garden, takes time, effort, and money. Don't let yourself get discouraged just at the point when things are primed to start happening. Make a one year minimum commitment to your business and do the right things. You will be rewarded!

There are many reasons people fail in MLM. They may have gotten involved in a bad company with a poor compensation plan. The products may not be top quality or anything special, so there is no demand for them. They may have received little training, poor training, or even no training at all. They might have been abandoned by their sponsor. They may have had the wrong expectations-- thinking that the money will come pouring in without any effort on their part. But the biggest reason for MLM and network marketing failure is giving up!

On the other hand, compare this to traditional entrepreneurship, which has its problems, too. I am a college business professor, and I’ve had traditional businesses of my own, so I know the odd of success in starting up a traditional business are that 9 clean carpets of 10 new business will fail the first year. And then there is another 4 in 5 chance that those businesses who survived the first year will fail to make it to the fifth year.

Wow, when you consider the amount of money spent and/or borrowed to get those businesses running, that’s pretty scary! Add to that the time involved in running a small business. professional carpet cleaning people put in 60+ hours a week, for less income than a job would give them. I’ve often seen dreamers who started their own traditional business find themselves crashing and burning with reality as they lost their credit, their homes, and in some cases marriages and families. Ouch!

I believe in entrepreneurship! I believe in the dream of having your own business-- no boss, no time card. Freedom to set your own hours, work where you want, live where fabric cleaning want, spend time with your family, travel and take time off whenever you want. Freedom. That’s what its all about! And it’s not traditional business that brings this freedom, it’s network marketing.

I’ll take the odds in MLM and network marketing any day! I’ll tell you why. If the 95% failure figure is correct, then it’s including all the people who just sign up to try the product, or decide for whatever reason they don’t want to work the business.

The truth is, for those who really want to work at this business, 95% of all people who stay with their network marketing company for 10 years will reach the highest level of their company’s compensation and upholstery cleaners which is usually at least $500,000 annually. And the income needed to start and run a network marketing business is nominal compared to a traditional business!

I’ll take those odds any day! You see, all you need to do is:

1) Find the best network marketing company you can.


2) Commit to learning and working your business.


3) And don’t quit.


Success in MLM and network marketing is a choice. Choose to do it!

Lessons from Network Marketing

Secrets from the top network marketers every business owner should know

Network marketing, or multi-level marketing, is one of the fastest-growing business models of the past few decades. Between 1993 and 2003, total direct selling revenues grew by 7.1% annually, dramatically above the rate of growth of the economy -- and of total retail sales (according to the Direct Selling Association).

The most prominent examples of direct selling companies include Amway, Avon, Mary Kay, Nu Skin, and Herbalife, which recently went public. In 2003, U.S. total direct selling sales totaled more than $29 billion, or almost 1% of the over $3,397 billion for total U.S. retail sales (U.S. Census Bureau).

Any business model that has achieved this kind of success probably has lessons that all business people can learn from. We define this family of business models as a method of distribution in which people are paid for sales volume generated by people they have recruited into the distribution network. 20% of American adults reported they are now (6%) or have been (14%) a direct selling representative -- defined as "the sale of a consumer product or service, person-to-person, away from a fixed retail location." In 2000, 55% of American adults reported having, at some time, purchased goods or services from a direct selling representative.

A significant number of network marketers have negative experiences with the industry. That is why 70% of all people who have ever been a direct selling representative are no longer in the industry. For the purposes of this column, we will not go into the challenges and problems in the network marketing model. There are plenty of Web sites on that topic.

We all work for ourselves. Gone are the days of being a "company man" -- your career is your business. Multi-level marketing just makes that explicit. Yet one of the things that makes the sector most attractive, the low barrier to entry, also creates some its greatest dangers. Many people get into it without the necessary skills to run a successful business.

We are primarily interested in what lessons all business people can learn from successful network marketing practices. We recently interviewed some of the industry's top experts and found seven lessons that all sales and marketing professionals can use to be more effective, regardless of their industry:

Every business is a relationship-based business
So says John Milton Fogg, founding editor of Networking Times, author of The Greatest Networker in the World, and one of the most successful teachers of network marketing. You cannot sell an inferior product with a superior relationship, but you need at least a functional relationship to sell your product. That is particularly apparent in multi-level marketing, an industry built around belly-to-belly sales.

Think analytically about your network
Shaul Gabbay, in his book Social Capital in the Creation of Financial Capital: The Case of Network Marketing, reports that the fastest-rising group of entrepreneurs [of the direct selling representatives whom he studied] were those who had initial weak ties to dense networks. In other words, successful salespeople penetrate an untouched market, and then work to gain a high market share in that market. This is easier to do if that untouched market is highly dense; everyone in it knows all the players. Why? Because word of mouth in that type of network will spread more rapidly about the value of your product or service. This principle is particularly evident in network marketing, an industry where "networks go to work." However, the same idea applies to almost any business.

Create a community around your product
One of the great ironies of the software business is that not only do many software companies outsource their development off shore; many also outsource their customer support to their own customers! When Best Software encourages you to visit their user forums to discuss your issues in using Act! software, that is a very cheap way for Best to support their product. Multi-level marketing companies rely almost exclusively on their communities for sales, support, follow-up, and recruiting.

Leverage the unleveraged
In 2002, 79.9% of the direct selling sales force was female. 56% completed only a partial college education, technical or trade school, or have only a high school education. This sales force looks very unlike the traditional American corporate sales force, which typically is much more male and has a higher level of education. However, the direct selling sales force looks just like their customers. People can be very effective salespeople when selling to their own community, because the common culture and interests create a foundation to build strong relationships more quickly.

Build a relationship first

"Internet marketers and network marketers share a common, terminal disease," Fogg says. "If you think of the whole process like dating, we bring someone to our Web site, and then we ask them to have sex immediately. There has to be some courtship first." One of the delicate aspects of network marketing is that people leverage their personal relationships to sell a product. Although that leverage makes some people queasy, the success of the network marketing model shows that many people do comfortably build multiplex relationships: Their friends are their customers, and vice versa. With delicacy, you can do the same thing.

Not everyone is a prospect
One mistake some network marketers make, as do many other sales people and marketers, is thinking of everyone they meet as a prospect. In network marketing, this is known as the "Three-Foot Rule", i.e., anyone within three feet of you is a prospect. But top network marketers don't do this. Max Steingart, creator of the "Success Online" training course for network marketers, says that it's not just about figuring out when to make your pitch, but even if to make your pitch. "You just build relationships with a lot of people. Some will become prospects and some won't," he says. "There's no timetable. If the time is right, you'll know."

Use online networks
The network marketing industry is a particularly good industry for leveraging online networks. Steingart teaches people how to "make the world your warm market," specifically by using online networks. He reports that when he instant-messages someone to start a conversation about potentially joining his distribution network, 50% of the people he contacts will respond to the conversation. More and more sales and marketing professionals will use online networks to accelerate their sales.

Leads are essential for any successful network marketing business. But where do you find the best multi-level marketing (MLM) leads? Is it lead generation, or do you buy leads? What’s the best way? Good question.

You need prospects for your business and customers to purchase products. Without the two, your business will not exist. So what is the answer?

Should you generate your own, or should you buy leads from a respectable leads company?
The answer isn’t as simple as you may think. Generating leads and having people come to you is the best scenario. And it works. It does take time. But in the end, it gets results.

Generating the best MLM leads is both a skill and an art that can be learned. One of the important factors to remember is that you are talking to real people. It’s not about you. It’s about them. Find out their feelings, their goals and wants. Then provide a solution. Build a relationship and then a partnership.

The fact is most people don’t care about your company, pay plan, etc. They care about finding a solution to their problem.

The good news. You can produce your own MLM leads. Today, the Internet has allowed us to do just that. There are many different ways to product the best MLM leads, but here are a few of my favorites:

1. A Personal Website.
Learn to sell yourself. Why should someone join you? What makes you unique? And what value and expertise do you bring to the partnership? Answer these questions on your Website. Sell “you.”

2. Use an Auto responder.
As leads visit your Website, offer a “free report or newsletter.” This will build your subscriber list and allow you to communicate with your prospects. Use it to provide valuable information. Timing is everything. If the timing isn’t right today, it may be next year. Be that person who has stayed in touch.

3. Have a plan.
You will need to set goals and stick to them. Be consistent and stay focused.

4. Write articles.
Article writing is a great avenue for building a presence online. Submit these articles to e-zines and newsletters. Articles are powerful because you can present yourself as an expert in your industry.

5. Create a blog.
Blogging is fun and it allows you to write freely to your niche. Blog posts can be various lengths. Blog regularly and watch your traffic grow.

6. Learn to Squidoo.
Anyone can do it. It’s simple, fun and it allows you to monetize your marketing. I’ve created some of my best MLM leads through Squidoo.
Generating the best MLM leads is a process that won’t happen over night. But it will happen. Pick one or two lead generating avenues and master those. Then, when you are ready add one more and repeat.
